It is best to write a simple letter that is straight from your heart. Tell the RTM members or the news organization what you think the problem is and what the solution should be. The following are sample letters that can be adapted if they match your thoughts.

Sample Letter 1

Dear Members of RTM District X,

I am pleased to learn that Darien is considering an ordinance to eliminate the distribution of plastic and non-recycled paper shopping bags in town.  Single-use plastic bags in particular present an insidious threat to our environment on multiple levels and now also to our health as microplastics find their way into our food supply. This proposal is a small step forward in the attempt to improve our environment avoid risks to our health.

Let's join the hundreds of towns, cities, states and countries around the world, including Greenwich, Weston, Stamford, Norwalk and Westport in CT that have taken the step to legislate FOR the consumption of fewer single use plastic shopping bags and the use of reusable ones. I also fully support a charge on recycled paper bags in order to ensure we are not simply switching from paper to plastic.

Thank you for your support of this issue. I look forward to the eventual passage of this ordinance.

Sincerely,

(Name and Address)

Sample Letter 2

Dear Members of RTM District X,

In anticipation of the upcoming RTM vote on February 6th to gauge the level of support for checkout bags in Darien, I wish to register my support for this initiative. Elimination of plastic and non-recycled paper checkout bags is a small step forward in the attempt to improve our environment and also to our health as micro-plastics find their way into our food supply.  Darien retailers must discontinue distributing plastic shopping bags, supporting instead recyclable paper bags or reusable bags. The plastic bags currently in use do not decompose for hundreds of years and then release chemicals that are harmful to our environment or find their way into the oceans (100,000 pa in Long Island Sound) where they break up into small particles called microplastics.  This simple step will assure one less negative affect for the future of our planet and our health.  I also fully support a charge on recyled paper bags in order to ensure that we are not simply switching from paper to plastic.

I will be watching this topic closely.

Sincerely,

Sample Letter 3

Dear Members of RTM District X,

I/We strongly support the proposal to eliminate single use plastic shopping bags and non-recycled paper bags in favor of reusable shopping bags in Darien, and in all communities. Disposable single-use plastic shopping bags were introduced in the 1970s and Darien alone is estimated to consume them at a rate of 6 million per year. one supermarket in town gives out around 18,000 bags a week! As a concerned citizen and constituent of District X in Darien, I am writing to ask you to vote for the ordinance to eliminate these bags.

Single-use plastic bags present an insidious threat to our environment on multiple levels. Bags in trees, bushes and waterways are not only a blight to our town but they also present real dangers to wildlife. They often wind up in waterways or on the landscape, degrading water and soil as they break down into tiny toxic bits called microplastics. Much of this plastic litter ends up in the Long Island Sound where it is dangerous to aquatic life as well.  Bags that are not incinerated and DO end up in our oceans will, over time, photo-degrade, which means that they break into smaller pieces that are mistaken for food by the fish that we then eat.

As a town that values its waterfront, and prides itself on the attractiveness of our community, eliminating the use of plastic bags supports these values and will embody a real desire to keep our town beautiful.

Hundreds of cities, towns and countries around the world have taken the step to simply advocating - and legislating - the consumption of fewer single use plastic shopping bags and the use of reusable ones. Here in our own neighborhood, Greenwich, Weston, Stamford, Norwalk and Westport have disallowed stores from distributing single use plastic shopping bags. We, in Darien, should take this opportunity to improve our quality of life and the legacy we are leaving our children by doing the same. This is a small thing that each of us can do that will collectively have an enormous and lasting impact. It is estimated that each family will save about 1000 bags per year by adopting this change, all by simply bringing our own bags along when we do our shopping. It isn't often we are presented with an opportunity to make such a positive difference by doing something so small. Don't let this opportunity pass Darien by. I also fully support a charge on recycled paper bags in order to ensure we are not simply switching from paper to plastic. Thank you for your serious consideration of this proposal. We look forward to being proud of Darien as a responsible leader and Steward of our Planet.

Please do the right thing and ban the use of single use plastic shopping bags in Darien.

Sincerely,
